The Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has called on the sports’ governing body FIFA to hold the 2022 World Cup finals in Qatar in the European winter.
The AFC general secretary Peter Velappen on Thursday said the finals should be held in winter as it was too hot in Qatar during summer to play football.
German FIFA executive member Franz Beckenbauer had earlier already called for a winter World Cup.
Velappen said that it was not a solution to cool stadiums and training pitches with air conditioners. He warned that some European teams could boycott the World Cup over temperatures that can soar to 40 degrees in the region during summer.
