After inserting East Zone in, West Zone bowled the side out for 278 on the opening day of the Duleep Trophy quarterfinals here. In reply, West ended the day at 10 without loss.

In fact, East did well to reach its final total. Half the side had been dismissed when the score was 116.

But Manoj Tiwary and Laxmi Ratan Shukla added 69 in just 50 deliveries thereafter to enact a minor recovery. Although Shukla and Shahbaz Nadeem were dismissed in quick succession, Manoj Tiwary remained unbeaten till the end.

The 28-year-old Bengal batsman made exactly 100 off 140 deliveries with four boundaries and six sixes.

Shukla’s 54, interestingly, came off just 31 balls (six fours and three sixes). Dhawal Kulkarni was the pick of the bowlers picking up three wickets for 62.
