TNPL: BCCI’s response awaited

August 21, 2016 12:37 am | Updated 12:37 am IST - Chennai:

There are only three more days to go for the start of the Tamil Nadu Premier League (TNPL) and the State Association is yet to get a reply from the BCCI to its letter about player participation.

In its letter, signed by TNPL Chairman P.S. Raman, the TNCA had requested the Board to grant it permission to field outstation cricketers, who have jobs and ration cards in Tamil Nadu, in the Twenty20 league beginning on August 24.

It had also appealed to the BCCI to release Tamil Nadu cricketers, not picked in the eleven for the Duleep Trophy games, so that they are available for the TNPL matches.

“Instead of sitting idle there, they can come here and play a few games. But the BCCI has not got back to us and there is very little time remaining,” said a top TNCA source.

The source added, “There are cricketers who are employed in Chennai and who possess ration cards here. They don’t become outstation players just because they are born outside the State.”

Next edition in July 2017

The TNCA plans to hold the next edition of the TNPL in July 2017 to avoid a clash of dates with any other domestic tournament.

“This being the inaugural year, we needed more time to organise the tournament.

“That is why we could not hold the TNPL in July. Next year, we will have the competition in July,” added the source.
