W.V. Raman has been officially named coach of the Tamil Nadu cricket team. The former India left-hander coached Bengal last season.
The 48-year-old Raman had guided the Tamil Nadu Ranji team from 2006 to 2010 and helped the State side unearth valuable talent during a difficult, transitional phase. He returns to the top job after Tamil Nadu had a disastrous run last season, failing to qualify for the knockout phase from its group.
Known for his technical attributes — he has the ability to spot the strengths and weaknesses of a cricketer — Raman will also have to focus on team unity. Last season was a tough one for Tamil Nadu off the field too with coach V.B. Chandrasekhar leaving the job before the season concluded.
The established batsmen did not display consistency last season while the lack of depth and incision in the bowling department were evident. Raman’s job, particularly when it comes to picking the right bowlers and achieving balance in the attack, will not be easy.
With Lakshmipathy Balaji favourite to be captain — Raman shares a fine rapport with Balaji — the State side will begin a fresh season with optimism.
While the TNCA has confirmed Raman’s appointment, it will take a final decision regarding other appointments soon.
