Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya passed away on Sunday evening in Kolkata. The former International Cricket Council (ICC) chief was 75.

He had been admitted with chest pain to a city hospital few days ago and had undergone a surgery. He passed away within 72 hours of the heart surgery.

“Mr. Dalmiya died of internal gastrointestinal bleeding and internal organ failure,” hospital sources said, confirming the veteran cricket administrator's death.

Cricket Association of Bengal sources added: “At 6 p.m. in the evening his condition deteriorated and shortly afterwards he suffered a massive cardiac arrest from which he could not recover.”

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee >condoled the passing away of BCCI president Jagmohan Dalmiya, calling him a ‘giant’ amongst sports administrators.

“Sad. Jagmohan Dalmiya ji passes away. He was a giant amongst sports administrators, a true lover of Bengal. On my way to pay my respect. RIP,” Ms. Banerjee tweeted.

"We will give him [Jagmohan Dalmiya] a state honour. He was an asset,” she said.

He is survived by a daughter and a son.

"BCCI Condoles the sudden demise of our president Shri Jagmohan Dalmiya", the official handle of India's apex cricket body tweeted.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his condolences in a tweet, saying: "My thoughts are with the family of Shri Jagmohan Dalmiya in this hour of grief. May Shri Dalmiya's soul rest in peace."

According to sources, the BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur and IPL chairman Rajeev Shukla will reach Kolkata on Monday.

Dalmiya had first helmed BCCI from 2001-04. He was elected president again in March this year. And, under a changed BCCI constitution, he was to hold office for three straight years, until September 2017.

The maestro Sachin Tendulkar took on his twitter handle "Heartfelt condolences to the family & friends of Jagmohan Dalmiya. Had met him in June. little did I realise that it would be the last."

"Will always cherish his encouragement & support over the years. Worked hard for the game of cricket & excelled as an administrator."

PTI adds

Mr. Dalmiya had been physically indisposed for quite some time with a lot of ailments and was not actively taking any part in the BCCI’s day-to-day activities.

During the time of hospitalisation, his son Abhishek Dalmiya had accompanied him. Former India captain Sourav Ganguly also rushed from his Behala residence while minister in-charge of sports (West Bengal) Arup Biswas also rushed to the hospital.

Due to Mr. Dalmiya’s health conditions, it has been secretary Anurag Thakur who had been running the show at BCCI.
