Former national selection committee chairman, Kiran More feels that Mohinder Amarnath’s revelation about the BCCI president’s interference in selection matters were “not in good taste”.
“I think it is a very confidential area. When you become a selector, you should know what are the rules of BCCI and its constitution. I differ with him (Amarnath) and it is not good for Indian cricket. The selection room is very confidential and nothing should come out of it,” said More.
“I feel very bad. It is sad for Indian cricket. It is not in good taste. As a cricketer I feel, whatever issues you may have against a player should stay inside the room.
“You can write your report to the board, but coming and speaking to the media and saying he should have been dropped or not is not good and it should have stayed within the meeting room,” he told reporters here.
Former national selector Amarnath had dropped a bombshell when he said that all the five selectors had decided to sack Mahendra Singh Dhoni in January this year, but BCCI president N. Srinivasan had intervened and disapproved the decision.
More said that the previous selection committee should have focused on building a new team.
“Only thing I feel is that we should have done more work after 2011. After we won the World Cup the process to build a good team should have started. That is where I have a question mark.
“The new selection committee is just a month old. We need to give them time. They are under tremendous pressure. We need to look ahead and look into the process of building a good team. We might have a couple of bad years but we have a lot of talented cricketers who can represent the country,” the former wicketkeeper said.
More said that the India’s Test team is likely to find it tough at least till the next year and the selection committee needs to develop a pool of talented cricketers to pick from.
“We need some process going and create healthy competition in the team. You need to have a pool of 25 players with options for fast bowlers, openers, middle order. But after 2011 we kept on playing with the same team in Test as well in ODIs,” said More.
“They could have given a chance to someone like Badrinath or Ajinkya Rahane who are doing well in domestic cricket. We could have had a pool of 10 fast bowlers. We could have created backup for Zaheer Khan, Ishant Sharma and Umesh Yadav but that didn’t happen. We need to learn these lessons.
“The new selection committee will have to work hard and create a good Test team for the future. I think the Test team will struggle for a year and a half. In ODIs and T20s we will do well,” he added.
The former cricketer also defended Dhoni, saying he has a lot of cricket left in him to play in all formats of the game.
“Dhoni has lot of cricket left. He is an outstanding cricketer. Overall the team is not doing well. As a player he is still good enough to play in all forms of the game,” insisted More.

I think Amarnath did the right thing by disclosing what happened. BCCI president
Srinivasan is having a serious conflict of interest by being a owner of CSK. He
should step down from one of the two. There is suspicion that he is backing Dhoni because Dhoni a CSK captain.
Infact, all the people who are supporting BCCI are compromised like Gavaskar, Ravi Sastry, etc. All of them are on the payroll of BCCI and they get paid huge amounts of money for being consultants to BCCI. So what ever they say needs to be taken with a pinch of salt. Only Mahinder Amarnath has the guts to speak out.
More is the last man who should talk about 'taste' of comments. As for Amarnath expressing his views, he has only said what he intended without pointing fingers on what exactly others said. He felt he is answerable to Indian people on the ongoing Test debacle and hence he expressed himself. As for More on the issue of coming to media and talking about dropping any player, he should flip the pages of history to watch his own actions when he was in Selection Panel.
A sane voice at last. Amarnath is unfit to serve on any committee if he is going to reveal every discussion held in close door meetings. What if instead of Dhoni the discussion was about a young budding player? It could easily destroy a career. The timing of Amarnath's comments is also most unprofessional coming when the team is down 1-2 and just days before the final Test. He could have easily waited for a week until the series ended. It makes one suspect that Amarnath went to media in a hurry only to serve his own interests rather than the team.
Srinivasan is owning a Franchisee and also the BCCI president, clear
conflict of interest!!!!! During the Blackwash in England and Australia
his response was, we will beat them in India. Will he eat his words
now??? What credentials does he have to run BCCI??? Why is BCCI letting
one man dictate... Ex cricketers should bring the dirty linen out,
Country comes first .
First of all Politicians and Businessman should not be given a chance to
participate in all BCCI Elections to avoid this kind of issues in
future.
People..we should have trust in the captain. It is the Team as a whole
is lacking, when we won the cups be in Domestic or International
series... we celebrated, just with a loss of one or two...MSD is to be
blamed..I really cannot understand how come the selection committee be
so lethargic in finding the back up for the front runs ( the seniors
who retired). Let the selection committee stop playing in the meeting,
instead if they find the time and strategy for the new and energetic
front runners, Team will play. lets face the crisis together and I do
agree with this article, If certain things are to be kept
confidential, so be it.
Dear Gentelmen, the fact of the matter is that the BCCI President, Mr. N.Srinivasan is running the Indian Cricket as if it is his personal property, just like his 'Chennai Super Kings'.
All cricketing decision are taken keeping the interest of the 'Chennai Super Kings' in mind, including its captain & Indian players of the franchise. Its high time the courts intervened in this & solve the issue, otherwise statements of people like Mr. Mohinder Amarnath will continue to be ignored, which is not in the best interest of Indian Cricket.
I fail to understand why selecting a player is such a "secret"? These secret business deals should stop!! period. Are players and captain not selected based on their credentials? If not then what is the secret?
Mr. More, you are one of them. that's it.
Your arguments are ridiculous. Amarnath's problem is with the board and its president. What is the point in writing to them about the issue? Secondly if there is an unanimous decision within the selection committee and if the BCCI bosses can veto the move, why then have the selection committee. Have the BCCI bosses handpick the team. The problem is nobody is ready to bell the cat considering its immense clout and money power and people like you are afraid to take it head on. Any such act might spoil your chances of being part of the board in future. But here we have one man who is courageous to take on the board. If you cannot support him, at least keep quiet rather than giving some meaningless advise. If the act is in bad taste, the commentary on that will also be in bad taste.
Truth hurts!.... Let the truth be told!.... Also it looks like common knowledge, so dont pick on a celebrated cricketer. Is it not better to be in the public domain and eyes. Is it not likely, there are similar events relating to the other person staying in the team as a permanent fixture to its detriment?
No one is answering did BCCI Chief srinivasan bat for Dhoni ? instead of
bashing amarnath...people should come out with facts on how far
selection committee is Independent ?
