The speculation on the election of the BCCI president was put to rest when Board secretary Anurag Thakur said on Tuesday that the former BCCI chief, Shashank Manohar, > would be the “consensus candidate. ”
Mr. Thakur told reporters at the Palam Ground that the scrutiny of the candidates would be done on October 3 and the president would be elected at the Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai the next day. Anyone, including Tamil Nadu Cricket Association president and former BCCI chief N. Srinivasan can vote, but Mr. Srinivasan cannot attend the meeting.
On October 5, the Supreme Court will hear whether Mr. Srinivasan can attend BCCI meetings.
Several names, including that of the former BCCI president, Sharad Pawar, Indian Premier League (IPL) governing council chairman Rajeev Shukla, besides Mr. Manohar, had been doing the rounds as candidates for BCCI president after the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya.
According to informed sources >, Mr. Manohar, who served as president from 2008 to 2011 , got the backing of the States governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
It is believed that he is also supported by the group led by Mr. Pawar.
BCCI to elect new president on October 4
The BCCI will elect its new president on Sunday, October 4. Following the death of Jagmohan Dalmiya on September 20, BCCI secretary Anurag Thakur has convened a Special General Meeting at the Cricket Centre here, thus meeting the mandate of the memorandum and rules and regulations to elect a substitute president within 15 days of the vacancy arising.
As per rules, candidates are required to file nomination by 7 p.m. on Saturday. A candidate has to be nominated by at least one full member from East Zone which had proposed the name of the president whose term was cut short prematurely.
As per the memorandum and rules and regulations amended on September 12, 2012, office-bearers and vice-presidents elected from the Annual General Meeting from 2014 shall hold office for a period of three years; that’s till September 2017.
Former BCCI president N. Srinivasan, should he choose to represent the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) at the SGM, is likely to be allowed to vote because the Supreme Court prevented him from taking part in the proceedings of the AGM at Chennai, but allowed him to vote.
According to BCCI rules, no business other than the one for which the SGM is called will be transacted.
Vidarbha Cricket Association’s Shashank Manohar may turn out to be the only candidate to be nominated by Saturday’s deadline.
Manohar, who served as BCCI president from 2008-09 to 2010-11, had voiced his opposition to Pawar seeking the support of Srinivasan; MCA president Pawar had declared his interest in becoming president again, and Srinivasan was willing to go with him.
