The depth of the mystery and wonder of God is such that none can understand Him fully, and none can deny Him with certainty either. Many sages and realised souls have spent ages in meditation to learn about the eternal wonder that is God. Scriptures try to speak of His glory but accept their inadequacy in this effort and claim that He is beyond thought and word and hence indescribable.
The Vedas state that the sun, the moon and the stars are able to shine with the light borrowed from Him and that He is the essence of the light of consciousness in all beings. The truth that He alone is Self-revealing is echoed in Tirumoolar’s hymns as the saint explores the paradox, marvel and inscrutability of God, pointed out Dr. Sudha Seshaiyan in a discourse. God is Supreme and Unequalled, existing eternally everywhere in the entire creation and also is beyond all this. He thus inheres as the life of the soul, and is the thinking power in beings.
He is the One who is also the many. Along with Shakti, He showers His grace on all. He is the body, the life, the mind, the knowledge, jnana and bliss. He is to be realised by transcending the limits of rational thought. He is the essence of Sat, Chit and Ananda. He can be hotter than the hottest and cooler than the coolest. But His mercy is boundless.
When God reveals the myriad facets of His ever wonderful nature to the devout, they are able to experience His compassion, mercy and love, and begin to understand His greatness partially. From the soulful hymns of the Nayanmars, the Azhwars, the Acharyas, etc, who have been constantly trying to grapple with His greatness, it is seen that whatever perception of Him they have is gained purely through His grace.
