After rejecting The Hague’s verdict, China has assumed a confrontationist posture (Editorial, July 14). To establish sovereignty over the disputed area of the South China Sea, it has decided to create an air defence zone. More than defence, China’s interest lies in the energy-rich seabed. In such a situation, India should tread carefully. We should keep trade relations with ASEAN countries alive without aligning with any of the countries engaged in the discord.

For decades now, China has been flaunting its might in South and East Asia, examples being illegal construction in Aksai Chin, regular incursions into Indian territory, a tacit understanding with Pakistan to create irritants for India, and now defending its moves in the South China Sea. It has to respect the verdict or it could lead to increasing tensions in the ASEAN region. American involvement will only make matters worse.
