The media can play a vital role in popularising the game of chess at least now during the World Championship being conducted in India. This game has unfortunately not been made popular like cricket; this despite India having produced a world champion. If children play chess, it will definitely stimulate their grey cells. Chess is a game of knowledge with entertainment.

This refers to the editorial “A battle of generations” (Nov. 8). Chess is a game of the mind; age and physical ability are only secondary. While Viswanathan Anand has experience and the younger rival Magnus Carlsen is proving his skill, both are equals. There are sure to be many surprises too.

The excitement is palpable everywhere. Here, in India, are two of the world’s best players. Billions of eyes will be riveted on the chessboard where the two masters will match skills. In chess you need brain and not brawn, a fact that makes chess “the game of kings” and “the king of games.”
