A picture is worth a thousand words. That's exactly the effect the page one picture in The Hindu (July 14) had on me. It evoked a myriad of emotions — anger, aggravated by the ever-so-familiar empty rhetoric of our politicians.

Actions speak louder than words. Famous examples of this are Israel, which hunted down the terrorists involved in the 1972 Munich massacre and, very recently, the U.S. which tracked down Osama bin Laden after nearly a decade of relentless intelligence gathering.

More than the news reports, the photograph said it all. With bomb blasts occurring at regular intervals, people are fast losing faith in the government. The choice of the city and the targets indicates that the perpetrators were bent on inflicting maximum casualties. Terrorists strike at will, thanks to the callousness of our governments.

The main objective of terrorists is to create fear in the minds of people, which the picture generated. They know that their heinous act will get wide media coverage and grab the headlines for at least 24 hours. One wishes there were restrictions on such type of coverage.
