On the Northeast

The plight of the people in the northeastern regions has always been glossed over (“The North-eastern challenge,” June 9). The UPA in particular did not seem to have done much to ensure that age-old misery and grievances in the region were tackled. This is because of the lack of right stewardship at the Centre to provide adequate security to those affected. It is a fact that lack of education, employment and poverty have compounded the misery of citizens there. Why is it then that scores of citizens from this region have migrated deep South in search of a livelihood and been forced to take up even menial jobs?

One hopes that the new government is able to come to grips with the situation, bring peace and stability to the region and ensure that the ambitious “tricolour revolution” announced takes into account the vast possibilities for development in the Northeast.
