I disagree with the views expressed in the article “For a more inclusive ballot” (Aug. 8). Not all people charged with crimes are “framed” and “innocent.” They do not deserve our sympathy. They ought to pay a price for the wrong they committed — it is as simple as that.

The article is progressive and timely. The voting right of an individual has a social aspect too. Imprisonment should not curtail a person’s social commitment. While a bar on persons with criminal background and those convicted for moral turpitude is necessary because they aim at decriminalisation of politics, denial of voting rights aims at nothing.
