History behind names

The decision to change the name of a tree-lined road dedicated to the Mughal ruler in order to honour one of our Presidents seems to be part of the right wing’s warped view of the past as present ( >Editorial, Sept.2 ). The purpose of studying history isn’t to right of the wrongs of the past, but to prepare for a better future. Aurangzeb remains an important part of Indian history, and history cannot be changed by expunging the names of its players, good or bad. It would have been befitting had the admirers of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam pushed for the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO), where the late President spent a great part of his professional tenure, to be renamed after him.
