As one who was born and raised in Africa, I can understand the anguish of African diplomats in India in connection with the fatal attack on a Congolese student in New Delhi (“Envoy raises retaliatory attacks with Congo”, May 27). The government should set up fast track courts to deal with such cases. We should also not forget that there are lakhs of Indians who are working and settled in various African countries. These incidents happen because of cultural differences and also out of ignorance of the lifestyle of African nationals.

We must treat all our foreign friends and guests with respect just as we would expect to be when we go abroad. Most people do not realise that India and Africa accommodate multiple ethnicities. Also, with China aggressively pursuing its interests in Africa, India can ill-afford to antagonise Africa. The paradox in all incidents of racism involving Indians is that Indians are not only victims of racism (particularly in the West) but also perpetrate racism towards others.
