March 24, 2010 10:36 pm | Updated 10:36 pm IST - KOLKATA:

A Communist Party of India (Marxist) supporter was killed by suspected Maoists in the Lalgarh region of West Bengal's Paschim Medinipur district late on Tuesday.

The victim, Sheikh Bashir Khan, was an active member of the CPI(M) and had been reportedly threatened several times by the Maoists as they suspected him to be a police informer.

A group of armed Maoists abducted Mr. Khan from his house at Joynagar village late on Tuesday and held a ‘kangaroo court' where he was awarded the death sentence. He was gunned down.

District Police Superintendent Manoj Kumar Verma said it appeared that the Maoists were behind the killing.
