The Congress will face defeat in the ensuing Assembly elections if it goes ahead with its alliance with the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), senior Congress leader E.V.K.S. Elangovan, said on Saturday.
“The DMK is family-centric and it has lost the people's faith,” he said addressing reporters here.
Mr. Elangovan said Congress representatives from the State had made it clear to the party high command at the recently concluded plenary session that it should forge a winning alliance.
He exuded confidence a decision on the issue would come very soon.
The entire Youth Congress cadre echoed the opinion of snapping ties with the DMK during the two-day tour of the State by All India Congress Committee general secretary Rahul Gandhi.
Mr. Gandhi has promised to take up their views with the party high command, he added. Mr. Elangovan clarified that all Congress leaders, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, had only said that the Congress has alliance with the DMK and no one said that it would continue.
When asked about Tamil Nadu Congress Committee president K.V. Thangkabalu warning of stern action against partymen who speak about the coalition, he said Mr. Thangkabalu should take action against lakhs of Youth Congress cadre.
