The police seized 106 ancient coins from residents of Magaral near here on Tuesday.

According to the police, Dhanasekar of Mettu Street had razed his old house. While levelling the ground for constructing a new structure, workers found a mud pot and handed it over to Dhanasekar. He broke it open and found that it contained ancient coins made of precious metals.

Dhanasekar and others in the village decided to share the treasure among themselves and struck a deal.

The Magaral police received an anonymous call about the treasure on Tuesday morning.

The force directed the villagers and Dhanasekar to hand over the coins and informed them that no action would be initiated against them if they voluntarily handed it over. Or else legal action would be initiated against them. The villagers returned 9 big and 97 small coins to the police, who handed them over to Revenue officials.
