NGO gets award for serving women's cause

The Rani Lady Meyyammai Achi Birthday Commemoration award was presented to Aashraya, a non-governmental organisation, for rendering yeoman service for the uplift of women.The award was presented as part of 106th birth anniversary celebrations of Rani Lady Meyyammai Achi of Chettinad, which carried a cash prize of Rs 1 lakh, a citation, a shawl and a memento.

Speaking on the occasion, Justice K.B.K. Vasuki, Madras High Court said Meyyammai Achi was born in a family known for its tradition and was married to a family known for its hospitality and culture.

Meyyammai Achi was known for her affection, compassion, sacrifice and patience. She also had courage, self-confidence and was a strong willed person.

Andal Priyadarshini, poet, in her address said she was known for her selfless social service.

M.A.M. Ramaswamy, Pro-Chancellor and Patron of Rajah Sir Annamalai Chettiar Memorial Trust and M.A.M.R. Muthiah, Trust president, spoke.
