AIADMK-backed Jaya TV today said it had received two more letters threatening the life of party chief Jayalalithaa and asked police to provide security to her and the channel.
One letter warned of bomb strikes on Kodanadu estate, her retreat in hilly Nilgiris district, and the other threatened that she would “not return home” if she went ahead with her proposed public meeting in Madurai next month.
The claim comes weeks after the channel’s earlier complaint which said that it had received two threat letters of a bomb attack on her meeting in Madurai, considered the stronghold of M K Alagiri, Union minister and son of Chief Minister M Karunanidhi.
Stepping up pressure on the perceived threat to Jayalalithaa’s life, AIADMK MPs had called on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently complaining against the ‘lackadaisical approach’ of the DMK government towards her security.
In a complaint to State DGP Letika Saran, a copy of which was released to the media today, Jaya TV said the two fresh letters were received at its office with the senders named as ‘Vaigai Puyal’ Balu and P T Muthu Pandiyan from Madurai.
In one of the letters the sender claimed himself to be a member of “suicide squad of Anjanenjan” (a sobriquet of Alagiri) and said Jayalalithaa won’t return if she come to Madurai.
In his complaint, Jaya TV’s vice-president (administration and legal) S Ranganathan said another letter bearing the name Balu warned of bomb strikes at Kodanadu and the house of an AIADMK advocate for raking up the murder of a former DMK minister.
Recalling the previous threats and complaints, Mr. Ranganathan claimed no proper action had been taken so far and demanded security for Ms. Jayalalithaa and Jaya TV employees.
Brushing aside the threats, Ms. Jayalalithaa has already announced that she would go ahead with the Madurai protest against the DMK government on October 18.
