Senior BJP leader L.K. Advani on Wednesday visited the Sri Ramanathaswamy temple at Rameswaram.

Accompanied by his wife Kamala and daughter Pratibha, he offered prayers at the shrines of Sri Ramanathasamy and Parvathavarthini. Special pujas were performed.

Holy waters of 22 ‘theerthams' were sprinkled on him by the priests. Mr. Advani went around the corridors (prakarams) of the temple. He was shown the third corridor, one of the longest in the world.

Parrying questions on politics, Mr. Advani told reporters that he was on a private visit.

The trip to Rameswaram, one of the important holy places, was to fulfil a long-time wish. He had already visited other holy places, including Kedernath.

He had brought holy water from the Ganga to perform ‘pujas' at Rameswaram.

Tight security was provided to Mr. Advani. Pilgrims were regulated during his visit to the temple in the evening.

Earlier, State BJP leaders Pon. Radhakrishnan, H. Raja, Sugumaran Nambiar, Muralidharan and others gave a rousing reception to Mr. Advani at Rameswaram.

He was given a traditional reception by Joint Commissioner Ilango and priests at the entrance of the Ramanathaswamy temple.
