The employees of the Salem Steel Plant (SSP) under the banner ‘Save Salem Joint Committee,’ holding black flags, staged a demonstration in front of the gate No. 2 of the plant here on Thursday in protest against the move of the Centre to privatise public sector undertakings in the country, including SSP.
The demonstration was organised as part of an all-India agitation by various trade unions.
The employees criticised the anti-labour policies pursued by the Centre, and condemned the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) management for curtailing the supply of raw materials to the SSP.
They asked the Centre to begin talks with SAIL workers on agreement by National Joint Committee on Steel.
Members of various trade unions organised another demonstration in front of the Collectorate to condemn the move to privatise public sector undertakings.
They asked the government to do away with all the anti-people and anti-labour policies pursued by it.
The said the fixed term employment system should not be introduced by removing the regular employees.
