Veteran playback singer Asha Bhosle’s daughter Varsha Bhosle used her mother’s pistol to end her life on Monday, police said on Wednesday. The weapon was reportedly lost 30 years ago.
“We have not yet recorded Asha tai’s statement, but she told us it was the same gun she had reported lost 30 years ago. She got the gun 40 years ago, and was issued a licence for it. It was revoked after she informed police she had lost the gun, she said,” Senior Police Inspector of the Gaodevi Police Station Pradip Lonandkar told The Hindu .
Asha asked to produce letter
The Belgian-make 0.6 calibre pistol was recovered at the columnist and one-time singer’s flat at Prabhu Kunj on Peddar Road of South Mumbai. The police have requested Asha Bhosle to produce the letter from the local police station that revoked her licence.
“It is difficult to find that record with us, because we keep records of gun licences for 10 years or at the most 15 years. We destroy the records after that. So we have asked her to produce the letter,” he said.
Police officials said that if the singer was able to produce the record, then they would have to take legal opinion about whether any action could be initiated against her. “If she has not have informed [us], then she could be booked for negligence,” a police official said.
Statements being recorded
Meanwhile, police are in the process of recording the statements of family members. Varsha’s brother Anand Bhosle’s statement was recorded on Wednesday.
