A policeman died on Wednesday, while 23 others were taken ill after they undertook a physical test for departmental promotion in Uttar Pradesh, a senior officer said.

“A head constable of 44 PAC Amrit Singh died after being taken ill in physical test during sub-inspector civil police ranker promotion examination in Meerut,” IG (Law and Order) A. P. Maheshwari told reporters.

The policemen, who undertook the physical test, had to cover a distance of 10 kilometres within 75 minutes.

“Seven policemen were taken ill and while Amrit died, four were discharged after first aid and two are still admitted,” the IG said.

In Kanpur, 14 personnel were taken ill after the test, while constable Mahendra was admitted to the intensive care unit of a hospital, he said.

Three such cases were reported from Sitapur district, Mr. Maheshwari said.

“Under the examination being conducted in 18 districts, there is provision that applicants have to appear in physical ability test after clearing written examination,” he said.
