October 06, 2011 07:48 pm | Updated 07:48 pm IST - KATTAPPANA:

An estate worker was trampled to death by a wild elephant at Kadalar in the Naimakkad tea estate in Munnar on Wednesday night. The Munnar police said the victim was Johnson, 38. He was attacked around 10.45 p.m. while he was returning to his quarters.

An autopsy was conducted at the Adimaly taluk hospital and his body was buried on Thursday.

Instances of wild elephants entering human habitats have increased recently and the animals often destroy crops. The police said that the area where Johnson was attacked was constantly raided by wild elephants. Even during day, wild elephants could be found there.

The Munnar Divisional Forest Officer said that a seminar on precautionary measures to be taken will be held on October 15.
