Five people were killed and two others critically wounded when a light engine hit a jeep at an unmanned level crossing at Sitalpur in Bihar’s East Champaran district on Tuesday, police said.
The accident occurred at Sitalpur near Nakardei on Sugauli-Raxaul section of the East Central Railway at 7. 30 a.m. when the engine suddenly hit the jeep which was crossing the railway track amid dense fog, the police said.
The driver of the engine managed to escape.
Angry locals blocked the railway track demanding adequate compensation to bereaved families.
The injured were admitted to a nearby government hospital where their condition was stated to be critical.
