By-polls to 5 seats on May 8

The Election Commission on Wednesday released the schedule for by-elections to the Kadapa (Andhra Pradesh) and Bastar (Scheduled Tribe-Chhattisgarh) Lok Sabha constituencies and the Pulivendula (Andhra Pradesh), Pipraich (Uttar Pradesh) and Aonglendan (Nagaland) Assembly constituencies on May 8.

The model code of conduct has come into force with immediate effect.

Counting of votes will take place on May 13, when similar exercise will be undertaken in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Assam, West Bengal and Puducherry.

The Kadapa by-election is caused by the resignation of Congress MP and former Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy's son, Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The Pulivendula by-poll is necessitated by the resignation of his mother Y.S. Vijayalakshmi from the Assembly.

The Bastar by-election is due to the death of BJP member Baliram Kashyap a few weeks ago. The notification for the by-elections will be issued on April 11. April 18 is the last date for filing of nominations. The papers will be scrutinised on April 19 and April 21 is the last date for withdrawal of nominations.
