Despite stepped up surveillance by the police, Maoist militia members felled trees at K Kondapuram in Venkatapuram mandal in broad daylight on Thursday and disrupted the vehicular movement on Venkatapuram-Bhadrachalam road on the first day of the two-day north Telangana bandh called by the North Telangana Special Zonal Committee (NTSZC) of the CPI (Maoist).
According to sources, a strong posse of militants intercepted an RTC bus bound for Venkatapuram near K Kondapuram village and warned the bus driver against plying the vehicle in defiance of the CPI (Maoist)’s 48-hour bandh. After issuing a stern warning to the driver, the militants cut down a few roadside trees and placed them on the middle of the road as road barriers.
They left behind some pamphlets at the site in support of the bandh. Traffic the busy road was disrupted for some time.
Meanwhile, the police intensified area domination and combing operations in the remote tribal pockets of the agency in the aftermath of the incident to prevent violent acts if any by the rebels during the bandh.
