Praja Rajyam Party (PRP) chief Chiranjeevi on Monday said his comments wondering about the source of huge wealth amassed by “political heirs” was not aimed at any particular individual.
“My comments were not about any particular individual. I was speaking generally,” he told reporters in Nellore district which he toured as part of his ‘Chaitanya yatra’ to raise mass awareness on various issues of public concern.
Though the actor-turned-politician did not name anyone in his comments yesterday, it was interpreted that they were directed towards Congress MP Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy.
“How can political heirs earn thousands of crores in a few years? If the money is earned in a legal and justified manner, then they should disclose that technique or formula, so that common people can benefit,” Mr. Chiranjeevi had said.
The TDP and even some Congress leaders have earlier accused the Kadapa MP of corruption and irregularities.
TDP and Congress leaders had sought to know how the young MP earned huge wealth and set up large businesses in a few years. Congress leaders close to Jagan, however, asserted the allegations were politically motivated.
Meanwhile, actor Rajasekar and his wife, known to be critics of Chiranjeevi, questioned the PRP chief’s credentials to talk about graft.
“Chiranjeevi faced allegations of selling off his party tickets during last year’s elections. What moral right does he have to talk about corruption,” Mr. Rajasekar said.
