World Fisheries Day
On November 21, 1997, the working fishermen and women representing World Forum of Fish Harvesters & Fish Workers from 18 countries met at New Delhi and established the World Fisheries Forum (WFF) advocating for a global mandate of sustainable fishing practices and policies. Kolkata’s ‘scorpion oil’ seller
Of the millions of species of insects and creepy-crawlies, the scorpion is one of the few that has fascinated man since antiquity. It has been elevated to the sky as a zodiac sign and deified as the Egyptian goddess Serket. Myanmar hopes for deal with Bangladesh
Myanmar's de facto leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Tuesday said she hopes talks with Bangladesh this week will result in a memorandum of understanding on the “safe return” of Rohingya Muslims who fled to Bangladesh in the past three months. A military clearance operation launched in Myanmar's Rakhine State has driven more than 6,00,000 Rohingya out of the Buddhist-majority country since late August.

More than 15,000 retired employees in Tamil Nadu have been struggling to get pension benefits for the past 10 years. They retired from service without getting gratuity, Provident Fund, pension and leave salary. Dearness Allowance was stopped to 65,000 pensioners.

The Bhim Sena activists also demanded the release of Bhim Army founder Chandrashekhar Azad Ravan arrested under the stringent National Security Act. Amnesty International India had termed Mr. Chandrashekhar's detention under the NSA a “brazen attempt to sidestep human rights safeguards in the ordinary criminal justice system.”
Water for irrigation released
A flash road blockade by hundreds of farmers of Periyar single crop area in Melur seeking water for irrigating 85,000 acres of single crop area disrupted vehicular traffic on Madurai-Tiruchi highway for more than five hours on Monday. Over 5,000 farmers and members of public participated in the road roko on the Madurai-Tiruchi highway at Melur protesting against the Public Works Department and the district administration for not heeding to their demand for release of water.

Warner expects to be fit for Ashes
David Warner is confident he’ll overcome a painful neck strain in time to play for Australia in the Ashes series opener against England on Thursday. Warner hurt his neck during a fielding drill Tuesday morning and received immediate treatment. He went for batting practice but only faced two balls before leaving the net. He gave himself 48 hours to recover before the first test starts at the Gabba. “My neck is quite stiff,” the Australia vice-captain said. “I’m getting a bit of treatment at the moment and hopefully it settles down I don’t think a sore neck is going to keep me out.”
Branagh, Friel among winners of Emmy Awards
Kenneth Branagh won the International Emmy for Best Actor, while Anna Friel won the Best Actress trophy at the 2017 International Emmy Awards gala Monday night in New York. Branagh and Friel were among 11 winning performers and programs spanning eight countries- Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Norway, Turkey, the United Kingdom and the United States. The awards are presented annually by the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which represents more than 60 countries and 500 companies from all sectors of TV, including internet and mobile technology.
Melania Trump takes custody of White House Christmas tree
Melania Trump, and son Barron, continued a time-honoured, first lady tradition on Monday: receiving the official White House Christmas tree. A military band quartet played holiday tunes as a horse- drawn wagon carried the 19 1/2-foot Balsam fir from Wisconsin up the White House driveway. They circled the tree and walked over to Jim and Diane Chapman, who presented it. The Chapmans own a Wisconsin Christmas tree farm and won an annual contest sponsored by the National Christmas Tree Association. “This is a beautiful tree. Thank you so much. We will decorate it very nicely,” the First Lady told the Chapmans and other members of their family. “I hope you can come and visit with us.”
Mahindra goes to Detroit
Automobile giant Mahindra on Monday opened its new manufacturing plant with an investment of $230 million in the world’s car capital Detroit, which got its first automotive production facility in 25 years. The new plant will create 250 new jobs in the US. In few weeks from now, the new facility will produce an off-highway vehicle which will extend Mahindra’s current position in this growing segment.
Dalveer Bhandari re-elected to ICJ
India’s nominee to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) Dalveer Bhandari was on Monday re-elected to the fifth and the last seat of the world court after Britain withdrew its candidate from the election. Mr. Bhandari received 183-193 votes in the General Assembly and secured all the 15 votes in the Security Council after separate and simultaneous elections were held at the UN headquarters in New York.
