The spot where a 22-year-old woman was set ablaze by a youth after she spurned his proposal, in Adambakkam, Chennai.

A woman in Chennai died of burns after she was set ablaze , bya 25-year-old youth, for refusing his proposal. Her mother Renuka (44) and sister Nivedha (20), who tried to rescue her, sustained burns and are being treated in hospital for their injuries.

The maker of Barbie has announced it will sell a doll modeled after Ibtihaj Muhammad, an American fencer who competed in last year’s Olympics while wearing a hijab.

The doll is part of the Barbie “Shero” line that honors women who break boundaries. Past dolls have included gymnast Gabby Douglas and “Selma” director Ava DuVernay.

Muhammad, the first American to compete at the Olympics while wearing a hijab, won a bronze medal in fencing at the 2016 Rio Games.

Thousands of women marched through the streets of Rio de Janeiro to protest a recent congressional committee vote to make abortion illegal without exception in Brazil.

Abortion is currently allowed in Brazil in cases of rape, a pregnancy that threatens a woman’s life or a fetus with anencephaly, a birth defect involving the brain. But the congressional committee last week adopted a measure that would remove those exceptions, provoking widespread outrage though many Brazilians hold conservative views on abortion.
