The Opposition asked Finance Minister Arun Jaitley to clarify whether the government had decided to scrap the newly launched ₹2,000 note and introduce a ₹1,000 coin as several such rumours were doing the rounds.

Sharad Yadav of the JD(U) said in the Rajya Sabha, “There are many people in our country who consume rumours on a large scale. If government doesn’t reply, people will start returning these notes.”

SP leader Naresh Agrawal also joined the chorus. Mr. Jaitley did not respond even as the Opposition members insisted on a clarification.
