Villagers go on the rampage

Defence committee activist shot dead, parents critically injured

Angry villagers of Radhanagar went on the rampage after suspected Maoists shot dead one person inside a school at Jhargram in West Bengal on Wednesday. Both parents of the victim, Srikanta Mondal, were also shot at when they tried to put up resistance. They have been admitted to the Jhargram sub-divisional hospital in a critical condition.

Three unidentified youths accosted Mondal at the entrance of the Sebayatan Girls School while he was on his way to a nearby shop. They opened fire and killed him. His parents, who had come to meet him, were critically injured,” said Mukesh Kumar, Additional Superintendent, Jhargram police district. Mondal did clerical jobs at the school and was also part of the defence committee at nearby Radhanagar village — set up to resist Maoist activities. Mr. Kumar said Mondal was instrumental in building up an anti-Maoist movement at Radhanagar.

Following Wednesday's incident, the residents torched several houses and vehicles in the Sebayatan area in protest against police inaction to curb the Maoist violence in their village.
