Indian Readership Survey figures show good gains for South India’s No. 1 English daily

The Hindu has registered a significant increase in its readership in South India, newly released findings of the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) for the first quarter of 2012 show.

It has gained 138,000 readers; this represents a growth of 5.7 per cent in national readership over the corresponding quarter last year. The newspaper’s current Average Issue Readership (AIR) is 22.33 lakh readers.

The Hindu retains its position as the most-read English daily in South India and as the third largest English newspaper nationally.

Dominance reinforced

In South India, The Hindu has reinforced its dominance in terms of readership. It has added 2,000 readers in South India compared to the fourth quarter, and stands out as the No. 1 English daily in the region.

In Chennai, The Hindu now has a readership of 5.40 lakh readers. This is more than the combined readership of all the other English dailies collectively.

In Coimbatore, The Hindu crossed the hundred thousand mark, its readership going up to 101,000. This is more than the combined readership of all the other English dailies put together, and 3.5 times the readership of The Times of India.

Hefty rise in Bangalore

In Bangalore, The Hindu’s readership has grown by a hefty 11.9 per cent, and in Hyderabad by 7.6 per cent, over the previous quarter.

In Kerala, The Hindu recorded a robust readership growth of 3.4 per cent over the previous quarter.

There has been significant growth in Delhi; readership has increased by 3.9 per cent over the previous quarter, which is the fourth quarter of 2011.

BusinessLine’s performance

BusinessLine, The Hindu Group’s business daily, has added 27,000 readers. This represents a growth of 25.4 per cent in national readership as compared to the corresponding quarter last year.
