National Investigation Agency (NIA) officials on Wednesday filed the second charge-sheet in the special court here in the case of twin blasts at Dilsukhnagar carried out by outlawed terrorist outfit Indian Mujahideen in February 2013.
A breakthrough in the investigation of the case came nearly six months after the twin bombings with the Intelligence Bureau officials catching Mohammed Ahmed Siddibappa alias Yasin Bhatkal along with his associate, Asadullah Akthar, in Bihar close to the Nepal border. The NIA officials filed the first charge-sheet in the case against the two accused, Mohammed Ahmad Siddibappa alias Yasin Bhatkal and Asadullah Akthar in March this year.
Siddibappa was accused of conspiring for the twin bombings that killed 18 persons and injured 131 others at Dilsukhnagar, while Akthar was charged with smuggling the explosive materials from Mangalore to Hyderabad, in the first charge-sheet. The material was used to make the Improved Explosive Devices which were detonated later at Dilsukhnagar.
Two months later, the NIA officials achieved the second breakthrough in the case by arresting Pakistan national Zia-ur-Rahman and Tahseen Akthar. Investigation established that IM operative Riyaz Bhatkal operating from abroad conspired with Siddibappa hiding in Nepal and the remaining three accused to carry out a terror attack.
Riyaz Bhatkal sent the explosive material and money to Mangalore where Asadullah and Rahman received them. The duo joined Tahseen, who had already reached Hyderabad as part of the plot, and prepared two Improvised Explosive devices. They later detonated the same at Dilsukhnagar on March 21, 2013.
