Rethink on quota bill, BJP tells State

High Court termed religion-based quota anti-Constitution: Bandaru Dattatreya

Senior BJP leader and Union Labour and Employment Minister Bandaru Dattatreya has said that the Telangana Government should think carefully about introducing religious-based reservations as the High Court ruled that such reservations are anti-constitutional. He was responding to a query during a media conference on the eve of the special Legislature session of Telangana Assembly here on April 16.

Asked about his reaction to the proposed historic bill to enhance reservation to Muslims, the Union Minister said he was aware that the special session was convened to ratify the GST Bill and it would be good for the State and the nation.

On the proposed bill on Muslim reservations, he however said reservation was a sensitive issue and “I would like to remind TRS party that the reservations are meant for those subjected to social inequalities. The High Court had termed religious reservations as anti-Constitution and the TRS government moved the Supreme Court where the case is pending. So State should think about this carefully,” he said.
