As many as 51 leprosy cases have been identified afresh in the district this year, and efforts have been on to find new cases if any. They have been put on medication with immediate effect.

Disclosing this at a programme conducted in connection with the National Anti-Leprosy Day at the Government General Hospital here on Saturday, Collector Yogitha Rana said that about 130 leprosy patients, who were detected to be suffering from eye ailments, were given treatment and cured.

During the leprosy eradication fortnight being observed from Saturday to February 13, several other measures would be initiated to identify leprosy patients and cure them by distributing medicines, she said. Unlike in olden days, this disease was no more a dreadful one and could be cured easily with medicines, she added.

Appealing to the patients not to be worried about the disease, but to go regularly to hospitals, she said it was the responsibility of everyone to create awareness on the disease and treatment available for it. Earlier, she paid home to Mahatma Gandhi on the occasion of his death anniversary and distributed bread to patients.

DM&HO Dr. Venkat, District TB Officer Dr. Dinesh, and JCI chairperson Ramya were also present.
