The victim, Mallika, who was a health inspector attached to the Primary Health Centre of Banavaram, died of head injuries at a private hospital in Chennai at 4.30 a.m.

According to the police attached to the Banavaram station, the woman was riding pillion on a motorbike with her husband, Veerasamy, on March 20. The residents of V.O.C Nagar in SIPCOT were returning home after work in the evening.

As they were riding on the road from Banavaram to Melvenkatapuram, two persons riding another bike tried to snatch her chain weighing three sovereigns. Mallika fell from the two-wheeler when she resisted the attempt and sustained head injuries.

The police said she was rushed to a private hospital in Vellore and then referred to the Government Vellore Medical College Hospital. Her family shifted her to a private hospital in Chennai, where she died.

The police also said that her husband could not identify the offenders who were aged around 25 to 30 years. They snatched a portion of her chain and fled, while Mallika held on to the remaining.
