The two-day Vegetable Show by the Horticulture Department as part of the summer festival at Kotagiri that began on Saturday proved to be a huge crowd puller. Exhibits at the festival were made using over 5 tonnes of vegetables.
This year, the Horticulture Departments in Coimbatore, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Madurai, Sivaganga, Theni, Tirupur, Tirunelveli and Tiruchirapalli are participating in the show.
Additional Chief Secretary to the Government R. Kannan, Commissioner for Tourism Har Sahai Meena, The Nilgiris Collector P. Sankar, Members of Parliament C. Gopalakrishnan and K.R. Arjunan, THADCO Chairman S. Kalaiselvan, HADP Project Director Srinivas, Joint Director of Horticulture N. Mani and a host of officials took part.
The cynosure of all eyes was the 30-feet-long and 12-ft-tall replica of a helicopter made using 500 kg of capsicum in green, red and yellow colours. The arch at the entrance made using carrot, onion, pumpkin and cauliflower drew more visitors to take pictures. The Horticulture Department from Madurai came up with a statue of Madurai Thirumalai Naicker with a peacock using vegetables while Dindigul Horticulture Department chose to make statues of Chotta Beem, elephant and birds drawing children to them. Tirupur district came up with a replica of spider man made of brinjal, while Kanyakumari district drew visitors with the statue of dragon and parrot made of beetroot.
There will be trophies and prizes for the participants to be given away at the valediction on Sunday.
