Two get 8 years for graft

Chief Judicial Magistrate S.Malarmathy sentenced a block development officer and a fitter to undergo eight years of imprisonment for accepting bribe in 1999. On December 22, 1999, farmer Sakthivel of Elachipalayam in Tiruchengode approached BDO Samiyappan and fitter Paramasivam seeking no-objection

certificate for digging a borewell in his land.

Both sought Rs. 550 as bribe for issuing the certificate.

Sakthivel alerted the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti Corruption (DVAC) sleuths. When Sakthivel handed over the money, DVAC sleuths arrested the two. A case was registered. The magistrate found both guilty and sentenced them to eight years imprisonment besides levying a fine of Rs. 50,000 each.
