Two electric engines, pulled by another AC locomotive, derailed in Kalpattichatram-Iyyalur section near here on Wednesday afternoon. The engines were being hauled to Golden Rock Railway Workshop in Tiruchi.

While one of the two engines broke the dead-end with sand hump and ran into the gravel field, the other engine got off the track.

Rescue operation

Railway officials, led by Additional Divisional Railway Manager R.V.B. Babu, were involved in the rescue operation till late in the night.

“Since the accident has happened on the loopline, no regular train services have been affected. The cause of the accident was yet to be ascertained. Our immediate focus is on putting the engines back on the track,” Mr. Babu said.

A railway source said that the accident could have occurred due to a possible brake failure.
