A girl studying Class IX has brought laurels to Thoothukudi by bagging a national award in an essay writing competition.

Taniyaa Cruz Ferdinand of Holy Cross Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School received the first prize for her essay on ‘Role of children in making petroleum conservation a national movement’ in a competition conducted by the Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA), a wing of the Union Petroleum Ministry. The national-level competition was held on September 30 last year at her school.

The girl said here on Sunday that the award was presented by Union Petroleum Minister Dharmendra Pradhan at the inaugural ceremony of ‘Oil and Gas Conservation Fortnight’ in New Delhi on January 16. The award comprised a trophy, a certificate, a laptop, cheque for Rs. 30,000 and a study trip to Japan. About four students of Classes sixth to ninth competed. Her father A.D. Bosco Raja is the Deputy Director of Health Services in Thoothukudi and her mother Angel Vellut is an Assistant Professor of Anaesthesiology. Headmistress Sr. Nirmala and staff members congratulated the girl for having won the prestigious award.
