Besides announcing a slew of measures for improving the infrastructure for sports in the State, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa on Wednesday said her government would evolve a state youth policy.

Ms. Jayalalithaa told the Assembly that six youth awards – three for men and three for women – between the age of 15 and 35 would be instituted in recognition of their contribution to social development.

The award would be presented on Independence Day and it would carry Rs. 50,000 cash, a medal and a certificate.

The Chief Minister said stadiums at Tiruchi, Kanyakumari, Kancheepuram and Dindigul would be refurbished at a cost of Rs. 80 lakh each.

All the 25 swimming pools across 23 districts would be renovated at a cost of Rs. 3 crore as they were over 15-years-old, she said.

An ozone water treatment system would be set up in the swimming pools in Velacherry, Shenoy Nagar, Madurai, Tiruchi and Thanjavur. Each swimming pool would get Rs. 15.75 lakh for renovation.
