The Southern Railway has taken up work on shifting the Station Master’s office and other infrastructure from the second platform to the first platform at the Tiruvarur railway station.
A new building is under construction on the first platform where the infrastructure – Station Master’s room, electrical, carriage and wagon rooms will be housed. Presently, the infrastructure is located on the second platform.
The construction of the new building for shifting the service rooms has been necessitated following the work on conversion of the metre gauge into broad gauge sector, according to official sources.
The conversion is being executed in phases between Tiruvarur and Karaikudi. The work on conversion had been completed between Mayiladuthurai and Tiruvarur and is to be taken up beyond Tiruvarur.
The Railways had sanctioned Rs.90 crore towards the conversion of metre gauge into broad gauge segment for the current financial year.
The rooms for the station manager and other personnel were located on the second platform, as trains on the metre gauge used to halt at or depart from the second platform. The old buildings on the second platform would be demolished in due course of time.
D. Manoharan, Assistant general secretary of Dakshin Railways Employees Union, said the dormitory on the second platform should also be shifted to the first platform. The British-built dormitory would be demolished as part of the gauge conversion project.
