The problem caused by stray dogs has been on the rise in parts of Karaikal town. The erratic clearing of garbage and a large volume of leftover food and meat facilitate the growth of dog population in the town. The problem is more alarming in and around residential areas, causing a threat to road-users, women and children.

Residents say that although no cases of dog bite have been reported, barking causes a panic and disturbance.

Visually-challenged persons from Nagamangalam on the Tiruchi-Madurai National Highway have been hard hit due to the four-laning of the highway. Quarters for the visually-challenged persons were constructed on either sides of the highway about a decade ago.

“We find it difficult to cross the highway now, as it has become an accident-prone zone,” say the visually-challenged men.

They have demanded construction of a foot overbridge in the area, as a subway is not feasible.
