With the work on construction of two-tier flyover in the city causing traffic congestion, the city police have asked the departments concerned to remove encroachments on road for effective traffic management.

A meeting was convened by the City Police Commissioner Sanjay Kumar to chart out strategies to reduce congestion on roads and also make city roads safe for road users. A visual presentation on issues on road, including encroachments that cause congestion was made. The meeting was attended by Regional Transport Officers, officials from City Municipal Corporation, Highways Department, Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation and members of private bus association.

Mr. Sanjay Kumar said that traffic diversion had been implemented at many places in the city due to the construction work. He asked the officials of the Highways Department and the Corporation to remove encroachments on roads so that adequate space would be available for road users. Shopkeepers, unauthorised parking of vehicles, and shops on road had encroached up to 15 feet of the road space and it need to be removed immediately, he added.

The Commissioner said that dustbins were placed in the middle of the road at many places that disrupted free flow of traffic. Also, the ongoing pipeline laying works on Leigh Bazaar Road should be completed at the earliest as diverted vehicles in large numbers pass through the road. He asked the bus owners to instruct their drivers to follow traffic rules and not use air horns in the city limits.

The bus drivers should stop their vehicles only at bus stops and also move in the prescribed speed in the city.

The Commissioner said that unauthorised autorickshaws were plying in large numbers in the city and asked the RTOs to inspect the vehicles and take necessary action. “Autorickshaw drivers should wear uniform while on duty,” he added.

Officials of the Highways Department said that the flyover work would take three years to complete and said that boomi pooja for the proposed flyovers at Thiruvakavundanur Bypass, AVR Roundtana and Kurangu Chavadi would be performed in 10 days.
