Updating Aadhaar

I would like to highlight some of the difficulties faced by people who have to make corrections in Aadhaar data by post. My colleague sent an application for correction in the date of birth for his son to UIDAI, Hyderabad, last month. As there was no response, I telephoned their office to enquire about the fate of the application. They simply asked for a fresh application. Immediately, he sent a fresh application with supporting documents. Though he received an acknowledgement, there was another letter a few days later which said that the application had been rejected for non-attestation of supporting documents. He again sent a fresh set, duly attested by his son, but again the application was rejected, for unknown reasons. When I contacted the office, they simply said that the application was rejected and nothing could be done and asked me to send a fresh application. He sent one again. This could have been avoided had the mobile number been entered while initial feeding of the data. For those whose mobile number is entered, correction or updation of data is very easy.

Road width

The conversion work of the two-lane road to four-lane on National Highway 49, from Madurai to Paramakudi, is being executed. The plan is to widen just three metres from the present seven metres from Paramakudi to Rameswaram via Ramanathapuram, the district headquarters. The town is surrounded by many pilgrim centres such as Uthirakosamangai, Devipattinam, Thiruppullani, Sethu Karai, besides Rameswaram island, the home of Ramanathaswamy Temple, which attracts thousands of pilgrims and tourists travelling by vehicles by road. The proposed 10-metre road will not cater to the growing traffic. Besides, accidents occur frequently on this stretch. Former President A.B.J. Abdul Kalam’s memorial would come up on a large scale in Rameswaram, which will too attract a large number of visitors. Hence the highway should be broadened with a long-term view in mind.

Bad stretch of highway

On the highway from Ramanathapuram to Tiruchi, a five-km bypass road stretch from Devakottai Road railway station is in a very bad condition. Vehicles cannot be driven on that road owing to the potholes, stagnant water and with poor subsoil. I appeal to the National Highway Authorities and the Sivaganga Collector to make efforts to repair this stretch.

De-silt tank

Ramanathapuram Big Tank is the tail-end of Vaigai river. During rainy season, surplus water enters into the sea. Desilting work of this tank has not been carried out at regular intervals. I request the PWD to de-silt the Big Tank ahead of the northeast monsoon to ensure adequate storage of water.
