State rank holders and district toppers in the SSLC examination in Ramanathapuram and Sivaganga districts are aiming high cut-off marks in the Plus Two examinations to study medicine.
Except for A.Ahamed Lafir, who stands third in the State and first in Ramanathapuram district, who wants to pursue chemical engineering, all the other girl rank holders are interested in studying medicine, and some of them are heading for boarding schools in Namakkal, the ground for shaping students for professional courses.
Lafir went to Namakkal to seek admission in a boarding school even before the results were declared on Friday. A student of Don Bosco Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Paramakudi, Lafir said engineering had been his passion and he wanted to become a chemical engineer. He scored 496.
His teachers moved friendly with him and other students, helping him feel at ease in approaching them to clarify doubts, he added.
In Sivaganga, both state third rank holders M.Akila Shankari of Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Tiruppuvanam, and J.Ranjani of St.Mary’s Girls Higher Secondary School, Devakottai, who have scored 496 marks, want to pursue medicine after securing good marks in Plus Two examination. Both the girls scored centum in Maths, Science and Social Science to emerge as district toppers as well, and they attributed hard work and guidance and encouragement by teachers and parents to their success.
Sivaganga
R.Abinaya Meenal, the district second with 495 marks, is the only rank holder from a government school in Sivaganga district. A student of Government High School in Paganeri, she has scored full mark in Maths and Science and wants to study medicine. Hard work and encouragement by teachers and friends helped her to come out with flying colours, she told The Hindu over phone. The evening classes conducted by the headmistress were extremely useful, she added.
R.Vasantha Prabha of Annai Velankanni Matriculation Higher Secondary School, who was district third with 494 marks, has decided to seek admission in a boarding school in Namakkal to prepare herself to secure admission to study medicine.
In Ramanathapuram, M.Riswanaa Begum of Muslim Higher Secondary school, Abiramam, stands second in the district with 495 marks.
M.Maha Abirami of Vivekananda Vidyalaya Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Rameswaram, who has secured the third rank in the district with 494 marks, said she wanted to become a doctor and render free medical service to the poor people in the Rameswaram island.
M.Yamini, daughter of a temple priest and student of Government Higher Secondary School, Paramakudi, who is the topper in the district among government school students with 492 marks, also wants to study medicine.
She would join a boarding school in Namakkal to secure the required cut-off marks for a free medical seat, she added.
The overall pass percentage has improved in both the districts, compared to last year. In Ramanathapuram, the pass percentage has gone up from 88.34 per cent to 90.34 per cent and in Sivaganga, it has gone up from 88 per cent to 92.16 per cent, official sources said.
Ramanathapuram Collector K.Nanthakumar and Sivaganga Collector V.Rajaraman congratulated the rank holders and presented them books.
