Pattali Makkal Katchi founder S. Ramadoss and representatives of 27 organisations met Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi on Wednesday to press for conducting caste-wise enumeration at an early date.

He also presented the Chief Minister with a memorandum on the issue.

Later talking to presspersons, he said that he did not trust the caste census the Union government had announced that it would conduct from June 2011. This could even be given up half way, he said, adding that the caste census should be conducted soon. This was needed since the 69 per cent reservation in education case would come up in July next year.

Asked about the Chief Minister's response to his demand, Dr.Ramadoss said the Chief Minister had made it clear that he too was in favour of a caste-wise census. “He [the Chief Minister] said that he would hold discussions with the OBC Commission chairman Janardhanam and then announce a good decision,” he said. Dr. Ramdoss said the census had to be completed before January 2011.

“We have pressed him to conduct the census in three months,” he said.

On alliance

Asked if the possibility of the PMK being part of the DMK for the 2011 Assembly elections was discussed, Dr.Ramadoss said this meeting was not to discuss anything of that nature. “Anything can happen in politics. This question is not relevant now. Now our concentration is on caste-wise census,” he said.
