September 21, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:37 am IST - SALEM:

As part of Swachh Bharat initiative of the Prime Minister, NSS volunteers from Sona College of Technology and employees of the Salem Railway Division cleaned the premises at Salem Railway Junction on Saturday.

They cleaned the station premises and also educated the passengers on the importance of their cooperation in keeping the premises clean. They also distributed pamphlets and handouts containing various cleanliness messages.

They asked the passengers to drop the waste materials only in the dustbins kept in the premises and also not throw it on the tracks.

Also, passengers were asked not to throw waste materials from the moving train on to the platform. Handouts containing the timings of the Special Passenger Trains between Salem and Karur that are in operation were distributed among passengers with a view to let them know about the trains.

Volunteers said that though railway workers are taking every possible effort in keeping the premises clean, cooperation from the passengers is important. Hence, the awareness level among the passengers has to improve, they added.
